Mandarin Tone Contrast in Whisper
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dominant cue to distinguish lexical tones is the fundamental frequency. In whisper, no such information is available due to the lack of excitation of the vocal folds. This paper examines the acoustics of Mandarin tonal contrasts in whispered speech and compares it with that of normal speech, aiming to identify potential cues for tone identification in situations where the major pitch correlate is absent.

Tone Production in Whispered Mandarin
Acoustic analyses of normal voiced and whispered Mandarin Chinese reveal significant differences in duration and intensity among the four lexical tones, differences that are moreover similar across the two speech genres. In contrast to previous claims, however, these differences among the tones are found to shrink in whisper rather than being exaggerated to facilitate perception. Furthermore, i...
متن کاملPerception of Tone in Whispered Mandarin Sentences: The Case for Singapore Mandarin
Whispering is commonly used when one needs to speak softly (for instance, in a library). Whispered speech mainly differs from neutral speech in that voicing, and thus its acoustic correlate F0, is absent. It is well known that in tonal languages such as Mandarin, tone identity is primarily conveyed by the F0 contour. Previous works also suggest that secondary correlates are both consistent and ...
متن کاملConstraints on Tone Sensitivity in Novel Word Learning by Monolingual and Bilingual Infants: Tone Properties Are More Influential than Tone Familiarity
This study compared tone sensitivity in monolingual and bilingual infants in a novel word learning task. Tone language learning infants (Experiment 1, Mandarin monolingual; Experiment 2, Mandarin-English bilingual) were tested with Mandarin (native) or Thai (non-native) lexical tone pairs which contrasted static vs. dynamic (high vs. rising) tones or dynamic vs. dynamic (rising vs. falling) ton...
متن کاملA whispered Mandarin corpus for speech technology applications
Whispered speech is a natural mode of speech in which voicing is absent – its acoustics differ significantly from normally spoken speech or so-called neutral speech, such that it is challenging to use only neutral speech to build speech processing and automatic recognition systems that can deal effectively with whisper. At the same time, humans can naturally produce and perceive whispered speec...
متن کاملArticulatory Features of Tones in Whispered Chinese
Whisper is a common modality of speech communication, regardless of language. Fibre-optic laryngoscopic photographs in research by Esling (2002) show that the vocal folds are parted for whisper, but that the laryngeal aryepiglottic sphincter is engaged during whisper inquiring from the perspective of the vertical plane into the larynx. The objective of this study is to seek further evidence on ...
